Examples of Radiator Fan-Related Diagnostics

01. Radiator Fan Not Turning On (Fan Not Spinning)
Is it overheating? the fan only turns on when the car is too hot and isnt moving enough.Ensure the fan is supposed to be on. Many modern systems only activate the radiator fan when the temperature reaches a certain threshold. You may check the Faulty fan motor or Blown fuse or relay
Broken temperature sensor
Bad Fan or Control Module: Anther common cause is a faulty fan or control module. "Normally this is caused by a bad fan or bad fan control module.
Faulty fan control module: Some systems, may trigger errors if the fan does not reach a certain RPM on boot. The diagnostics will get the fan blades to spin but will also fail due to the fan unable to reach the 3,700 RPM threshold.
02. Radiator Fan Runs Constantly
- Stuck fan relay
- Faulty coolant temperature sensor
- Bad ECU signal
- A/C system issues causing fan override
03. Fan Turns On Too Late (Engine Overheats)
Malfunctioning thermostat
Failing temperature sensor
Delayed signal from the ECU
Clogged radiator causing late heat build-up
04. Fan is Noisy or Vibrates
-
Damaged fan blades
Loose fan mounting
Worn bearings in the motor
Debris in the fan shroud
05. Voltage Issues
The odd behavior with the probe is because the probe is acting as an antenna which is enough voltage to trigger the control circuit.
Sometimes, the fan may only work when backprobed with a test lead, indicating a potential voltage drop or bad connection.
Additional Tips
Coolant Temperature Control:
Setting fan speeds based on coolant temperature is often recommended for smoother and more consistent performance. Simple. Your coolant temperature directly reflects your component temperature but changes at a slower rate due to the high heat capacitance of water.
Accurate Sensor Placement:
Ensure temperature sensors are placed correctly to provide accurate readings. You just need one sensor to keep the water temp to a level that works for you.
