is the cooling fan supposed to run constantly?

I'm afraid the cooling fan is not designed to run constantly.

In normal operating conditions, the auto cooling fan should only run when the engine is running and the coolant temperature reaches a certain point. This helps to maintain optimal engine operating temperature.

Could you kindly let me know under which circumstances the cooling fan might run continuously?

There are a few scenarios where the cooling fan might run continuously.

In situations where there is heavy traffic or a lot of stop-and-go driving, In such situations, the engine may not generate sufficient airflow to cool itself effectively, which could result in the fan running to compensate.

In the event of high ambient temperatures, In the event of extremely high external temperatures, the engine may be required to work harder in order to maintain its temperature, which could result in the fan running more frequently.

In the event of malfunctions, In the event of a malfunction in the cooling system, such as a faulty thermostat or radiator, the fan may operate continuously in an attempt to cool the engine.

If you notice that your cooling fan is running constantly, even when the engine is cold or you're driving on a highway, it might be a good idea to have a mechanic take a look at it. There could be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. This could be a sign of a problem with the cooling system, and it's always best to address potential issues before they lead to more serious problems down the road.
